Ethical Policies

 

The policies outlined below follow the recommendations of the COPE Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors, as well as those of Elsevier (http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines).

Grecorromana. Revista Chilena de Estudios Clásicos is committed to the publication and dissemination of Greco-Roman culture in its broadest sense, adhering to the highest standards of quality and ethical integrity. These standards apply to all stages of the publication process—from manuscript submission and peer review to final publication decisions—and to all individuals involved, including the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board, Scientific Committee, peer reviewers, and authors. Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.

To ensure and safeguard the originality of submitted manuscripts, the journal employs digital tools and anti-plagiarism software to assess similarity, paraphrasing, citation practices, and the proper use and referencing of sources.

The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be explicitly disclosed, specifying the nature and extent of its involvement. AI may only be used as a tool or support mechanism and not as an autonomous agent responsible for the core analysis of the work. Under no circumstances will AI be recognized as a co-author or assigned intellectual responsibility.

Likewise, AI may not replace the evaluation carried out by expert double-blind peer reviewers. Reviewer reports may be subject to AI-use detection by the Editorial Board.

 

Responsibilities

 

Editorial Board

  • Publication Decisions. The Editorial Board of Grecorromana is responsible for selecting the articles to be published in the journal. It must adhere to the ethical standards outlined in this statement and ensure compliance with applicable legal principles, including copyright and plagiarism regulations. The Board retains the authority to discuss and, where appropriate, revise the recommendations of reviewers or members of the Scientific Committee. It is also responsible for assigning submitted manuscripts to suitably qualified reviewers based on the general or specific subject matter of each submission, thereby ensuring an appropriate and rigorous review process.
  • Non-Discrimination. The Editorial Board evaluates manuscripts and makes publication decisions independently of the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, nationality, or political views.
  • Confidentiality. The Editorial Board must not disclose any information regarding submitted manuscripts or their authorship to third parties not directly involved in the editorial process.
  • Transparency and Conflicts of Interest. The Editorial Board must not use unpublished information from submitted manuscripts for its own research without the explicit consent of the author.

 

Reviewers

  • Confidentiality. Manuscripts under review are confidential documents and must not be shared or discussed with third parties outside the review process.
  • Timeliness. Given the timelines for publication, reviewers should decline invitations if they are unable to complete the review within the allotted time. If they accept, they are expected to submit their evaluation within the deadlines established by Grecorromana.
  • Review Process. Reviewers are responsible for critically evaluating the manuscript in order to determine its suitability for publication. They may also provide constructive feedback to help the author improve the manuscript. Their reports constitute essential input for the final publication decision.
  • Transparency and Conflicts of Interest. Reviewers must keep all aspects of the review process confidential and must recuse themselves from evaluating any manuscript in which a conflict of interest may arise.

 

Authors

  • Research Integrity. Authors are responsible for submitting research that complies with the ethical standards of the journal. Manuscripts must be original and must not be under review elsewhere. This includes refraining from submitting substantially similar versions of the same work to multiple journals simultaneously. Submissions must also demonstrate a clear and coherent structure, appropriate use of primary and secondary sources, methodological clarity, well-defined research objectives, and a sound interpretation of results.
  • Originality. Authors must ensure the originality of their work. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
  • Authorship. Authorship is limited to individuals who have made a substantial and active contribution to the research and/or writing of the manuscript. All such contributors must be listed as co-authors. Individuals who have contributed in a more limited or indirect capacity may be acknowledged but should not be listed as authors. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure compliance with these criteria.
  • Fundamental Errors. If an author identifies a significant error in their work after submission or publication, they are obligated to notify the journal and cooperate in correcting it.

 

Sanctions

 

In cases of misconduct or violations of research ethics, the Editorial Board may take measures proportional to the severity of the offense. These may include the following sanctions:

  • Formal warning and public notice. A formal statement may be issued to the author identifying the ethical breach. This may include a public notice on the journal’s website detailing the nature of the violation and, where appropriate, correcting or acknowledging proper authorship.
  • Retraction of the publication. The article may be withdrawn, accompanied by a formal statement of the ethical violation addressed to the author, their affiliated institution, and the journal’s readership.

In cases involving corrections or retractions, the relevant indexing services and databases will be duly notified.
