Abstract

This article is about silence in Herodotus and Thucydides. It aims, through the stories of these historians, to categorize different contexts in which silence appears. The topics it addresses are: freedom of speech, silence as a political strategy, the tyrant imposes silence, silence and war and silence out of fear. Through the analysis of a lexicon related to silence and its appearances in the texts, it is concluded that silence can be understood as a strategic tool in both a political and personal order.
