Dubia refers to this commentary on a collection of 173 paradoxographical anecdota in Ancient Greek, of uncertain authorship and title. The apparent simplicity of the work, lacking innovation and composed of light, popular material focused on grotesque and astonishing themes, conceals clear values of conceptual technique, such as rewriting, reinvention, source manipulation, and the continuity of the literary genre. Contemporary scholarship attributes these brief, informative narratives, preserved in a single manuscript, to Pseudo-Antigonus, dating from the third century BCE. Exhibiting Hellenistic erudition, these diverse empirical notes explore the spectrum between the incredible and the plausible, arranged into thematic groups across various cultural domains, providing insights into ethnography, anthropology, botany, geography, hydrology, zoology, and traditional knowledge. Overall, the collection invites the reader to a philosophical exercise in rational inquiry into the inexplicable.
