This paper deals with the kind of government which was present during the period called «Roman republic» and presents the different positions that analyze it as an aristocratic government or a democratic one. The fruitful historiographical debate in these last thirty years has achieved a better and more profound knowledge of the functioning of the Roman political system, and also a more comprehensibly understanding of the causes of its grandeur and decline.
