ALEXANDER THE GREAT IN THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN ROMANS AND GREEKS

The aim of this paper is to go beyond the analytical tools of imitatio, aemulatio and comparatio dedicated to the study of the Roman receptions of Alexander the Great by investigating the use of his image in interactions between Romans and Greeks. Considering that the most of the receptions handed down to us from the sources are due to uses of Alexander’s image intended for an audience, we can identify situations in which the Macedonian is the instrument of a dialogue, sometimes a negotiations between Romans and Greeks. For the former it is a matter of obtaining the adherence of the Hellenistic community to their policy or their magistrates, for the latter of obtaining benefits from their links with Alexander.
